We found a <a href=\"http:\/\/nuxx.net\/wiki\/Apple_Accessory_Protocol\" target=\"_blank\">wiki site nuxx.net<\/a> with the protocol reverse engineered, and it was as simple as sending serial strings at 8N1 19200 speeds, terminating with a checksum. We wrote up functions to pause, play, and skip songs, and they worked great.<\/p>\n<p>Using a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pinouts.ru\/PortableDevices\/ipod_pinout.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">pinout\u00a0we found at pinouts.ru<\/a>, we connected to the line level audio out, and fed that through our audio multiplexer and into the amp. We had bought a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparkfun.com\/commerce\/product_info.php?products_id=8295\" target=\"_blank\">breakout adapter from Sparkfun<\/a> which made it easy to wire to the iPod.
